What JPG to PNG Can and Cannot Do

PNG is a lossless output format, which is useful when another tool specifically requires PNG. Converting a JPG to PNG preserves the visible pixels you already have, but it does not restore image details that JPG compression removed earlier.

Important details

PNG files may be larger. Photos often become bigger as PNG because PNG is not optimized for photographic compression.
No new transparency is created. A JPG has no transparent pixels, so the exported PNG stays fully opaque.
Quality does not magically improve. The PNG copy avoids additional JPG compression, but it cannot recover lost detail from the original JPG.
